Project: Commons Comedy Carnaval

A non-profit arts and culture organization with a mission to amplify the visibility of performance making, and to champion equity through advocacy, art making, convening, and scholarship. We will highlight some of the best comedic talents in the country in a myriad of formats, including three full-length play readings, a late-night of stand-up, and solo performances, and three sketch comedy performances. The event has two goals: to introduce national theatre decision-makers to new comedy plays and talent and to connect the local and national theatre-making communities.

We are casting for selected roles in the play readings. Readings will be staged with minimal production values. Readers need not be off-book but should be strong physical and vocal performers able to convey the essence of the storytelling without all the bells and whistles.

We are seeking actors for two play readings:

Exhaustion | Arroyo.

Synopsis: Three friends escape into the Santa Cruz mountains in search of a place to swim and BBQ. They packed for the beach without realizing they had a treacherous hike down a ravine. Once at a waterhole, the consumption of some shrooms sets the stage for a heartfelt adventure between friends too tired to know how to rest.

Escobar's Hippo

Synopsis: A Colombian town along the Magdalena River plunges into chaos after a flatulent, destructive, easily offended, and sexually adventurous hippo comes to town and wreaks havoc. The crisis worsens when people begin transforming into hippos themselves, causing not only chaos but the beginnings of a revolution where humans are put to death by these new Hipposapiens. As this shifting of civilization unfolds, three friends try to figure out how to deal with the transforming population and solve the connection between the hippos and a notorious drug lord.

Project: The Trail to Oregon

About the Musical:

"The Trail to Oregon! is an original musical was performed in Chicago in the summer of 2014. It is also the most historically accurate musical portraying the Oregon Trail to date; featuring 12 educational songs, a set precisely replicating the trail’s landscape, and appearances from famous historical figures, such as: Henry McDoon, Cletus Jones, and Cornwallis."

A comedy musical is looking for actors willing to bring humor, dedication, and experience to the stage!

The show is for an audience of 15 or older, and is set to be performed in a High School Stage. The rehearsal location is not yet set but will be in the Greeley/Evans area.

Any actors selected for callbacks following initial auditions will receive an email on June 8th regarding callbacks.  If you did not receive a callback that does not mean you are not being considered.

For those selected for callbacks, the email will include a song to sing for The Trail to Oregon! along with an acting side to prepare. It is recommended that both are memorized, but not required. Auditionees should also be prepared for cold reads on the day of callbacks, June 10th.

Project: narrators for true crime video podcast

We do true crime and true encounters with the strange. These are SCRIPTED video presentations.

We're looking to add narrators and writers to our core group.

The main host needs regular fill-in hosts. If you enjoy doing this, we plan to have a couple of scripts a month for you. If you have a good personality for video presentations, the job is easy! You'll record the video in your own home on your own time. We'll show you a free teleprompter link. So all you need is a decent mic and a laptop. Green screen is a plus, but not essential.

You'll get "hosted by" credit and IMDB. You can also take the opportunity to pitch yourself or your work.

The scripts are usually around 4000 to 5000 words. This should be a half to an hour's work. We edit out mistakes, so you just have to have fun and read.

If you are familiar with Mr. Ballen's channel, this is a perfect example of the type of storytelling we want and the style of video presentation.

Three things are needed for a great story: an engaging storyteller, an audience, and of course the story.

The storyteller: A good storyteller is animated, brings energy, looks the audience in the eye and says "come with me on this journey".

The audience is a critical part of the equation. In a live setting, the storyteller can sense the audience's attention drifting away, and adjusts her story to recapture it. This adjusting shows how the vital interaction between the storyteller and the audience shapes the story itself. With a youtube channel, that feedback is limted to comments below. But a good storyteller can still imagine that audience and create the sense of interaction. A wry small or perfectly placed inflection. The storyteller instinctively understands the audience interaction and gets better at this over time. It's a crucial skill for stand-up comics, educators, actors and boardroom executives.

The story itself is where the all-important but seldom appreciated writing comes in. We want a small team to work together, growing in their skill at crafting stories that hook an audience and hold it.

Project: Amma’s Ashes, a short film

"Amma's Ashes" was just selected by the Access Sacramento film studio as one of 10 screenplays to be produced this summer for the Place Called Sacramento Film Festival.

We're looking for South Asian women, men and teens, including one genderqueer teen/young adult actor.
